{"id":27,"date":"2013-02-13T01:32:29","date_gmt":"2013-02-13T06:32:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncgts.com\/?page_id=27"},"modified":"2013-02-13T01:32:29","modified_gmt":"2013-02-13T06:32:29","slug":"about-the-ncgts","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/virtual.ncgts.com\/?page_id=27","title":{"rendered":"History of the NC Great Teachers Seminar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-1973 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncgts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/circle-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"circle\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" data-id=\"1973\" \/>In 1993, the first North Carolina Great Teachers Retreat (originally called the<em>\u00a0Great Blue Ridge Teacher Retreat<\/em>) was first held at Camp Kanuga in\u00a0Hendersonville, North Carolina. This retreat was a direct result of\u00a0Dr. Kathy Matlock (Dean of Instruction at Blue Ridge\u00a0Community College) deciding to have Blue Ridge Community\u00a0College sponsor a retreat after hearing David Gottshall (founder of\u00a0the GTM) present information about the GTM at a national\u00a0conference.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Matlock designated Julie Thompson, Director of the Blue\u00a0Ridge Community College Career Development Center, to\u00a0coordinate the event. Retreats were held in 1993 and 1994 with no\u00a0retreat held in 1995. However, in 1996 the 3rd annual retreat was\u00a0held followed by retreats in 1997 and 1998. Julie left her\u00a0Coordinator&#8217;s position in 1998 and the responsibilities of the retreat\u00a0were forwarded to Steve Smith (faculty member at Richmond CC) until he left the college in 2006. \u00a0In 2007, Kay Crouch (Caldwell CC&amp;TI) assumed duties as seminar coordinator. \u00a0In 2013, <a title=\"1st Person Seminars\" href=\"http:\/\/1stpersonseminars.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1st Person Seminars Higher Education Consulting, LLC <\/a>was formed as an entrepreneurial venture by Steve Smith to provide professional learning in higher education &amp; business settings. \u00a0Since Kay retired in 2013 from CCC&amp;TI, 1PS handled the registration, payment, and event logistics.\u00a0 The 2016 seminar was moved from Hendersonville, NC to Salter Path, NC (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinityctr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trinity Center<\/a>). In 2017, Pete Golden, Director of the Teaching and Learning Center at Sandhills Community College assumed the administrative duties (registration, payment, and event logistics.)\u00a0 After he retired in 2021, Ronda Hawkins, SCC Early Childhood Professor,\u00a0 became the NC Great Teacher Seminar Coordinator.\u00a0 In 2021 and 2022 the seminar was offered virtually due to COVID restrictions. The 2023 seminar is being held in-person at the Trinity Center in Salter Path, NC.
